SURFACE GUIDE

When do walls need repairs, primer or sealer?

A lasting finish depends on the condition beneath the paint. The correct preparation can only be confirmed after the surface is accurately assessed.

Signs to point out early

Inspect your walls for these common surface issues before applying a fresh topcoat:

Peeling or flaking paint on interior wall

Peeling & Flaking

Scrape loose paint back to a firm edge, patch with filler, and sand smooth before applying paint.

Chalky or powdery wall paint surface

Chalky & Powdery Walls

Common on older or unsealed walls. Wiping leaves residue; requires a dedicated wall sealer to bind the surface.

Water stain rings around window and wall

Water Stains & Dampness

Yellowish rings signal moisture intrusion. Always resolve the leak before applying a stain-blocking primer.

Mould and mildew growth on interior wall

Mould & Mildew

Dark spots in humid areas will bleed through new paint unless treated with an anti-fungal solution first.

Choosing the Right Treatment Step

1

Wall Repair (Patching & Sanding):

Used for hairline cracks, nail holes, and deep gouges. Spackling or joint compound fills uneven gaps, which are then sanded smooth.

2

Wall Sealer:

Formulated to bind chalky, powdery, or porous surfaces (like new skim coats or old deteriorating walls) so the topcoat can stick properly.

3

Stain-Blocking Primer:

Essential when transitioning from dark colors to light colors, or when hiding stubborn water, grease, or smoke marks.
