Painting tiles with epoxy: what to consider before you start

Hacking old toilet or kitchen tiles in Singapore is noisy, messy, and can easily cost thousands of dollars. Epoxy tile painting is a popular budget-friendly alternative to refresh outdated bathroom walls and kitchen splashbacks without hacking. But before jumping in, there are a few important practical trade-offs you should know so your new tile finish lasts for years.

4 Things to Consider Before Painting Your Tiles

Epoxy paint forms a tough, waterproof layer over glossy ceramic tiles, but it works very differently from standard wall paint:

Surface Prep is Everything

Tiles are super smooth and non-porous. If soap scum, grease, or dirt isn't thoroughly etched and cleaned off, epoxy paint will peel off in sheets within months.

Floor Tiles vs. Wall Tiles

Epoxy works amazingly on bathroom and kitchen wall tiles. However, for toilet shower floors with constant standing water and heavy foot traffic, epoxy can wear off faster over time.

Strong Chemical Smell While Drying

Professional epoxy coatings give off strong chemical fumes while curing. Good ventilation (turning on exhaust fans and keeping doors open) for 24 to 48 hours is a must.

Curing Time Needs Patience

While epoxy dries to the touch in a day, it takes up to 3–5 days to fully cure and reach maximum waterproof hardness. Showering on it too early will ruin the seal.

How Proper Epoxy Tile Coating Works

To make sure the new paint sticks securely and handles daily humidity, we follow a strict multi-step process:

1

Deep Degreasing & Tile Etching

We scrub the tiles with heavy-duty degreasers to remove all soap film and body oils, then lightly etch or sand glossy tiles so the primer gets a firm grip.

2

Grout Line Inspection & Patching

We inspect the grout lines between tiles. Any loose or moldy grout is cleared out and patched up so moisture cannot get trapped underneath the paint layer.

3

Specialized Bonding Tile Primer

We apply a high-adhesion tile primer designed specifically to bridge glossy ceramic surfaces with epoxy paint systems, preventing future flaking or bubbling.

4

Two Topcoats of Durable Epoxy Paint

We coat the tiles with two layers of specialized, washable 2-pack epoxy topcoat in your choice of color, creating a seamless, fresh, and mold-resistant finish.
