WALL ASSESSMENT & REPAIRS GUIDE

What causes paint to peel in bathrooms and toilets?

Flaking, bubbling, or peeling paint on bathroom ceilings and walls is one of the most common issues in Singapore HDB flats and condominiums. Because bathrooms experience extreme daily humidity, trapped steam and moisture quickly destroy paint adhesion if the surface isn't prepared or painted correctly.

Primary Causes of Bathroom Paint Failure

Understanding why paint loses its grip in wet areas helps prevent repeating the same mistake when repainting:

Trapped Steam & Poor Ventilation

Hot showers fill compact bathroom spaces with steam. Without adequate airflow, moisture settles on the ceiling plaster, weakening the bond between the paint film and the concrete slab.

Painting Over Damp Surfaces

If walls or ceiling skim coats are not completely dry before applying paint, trapped moisture evaporates upward, creating water bubbles and flaking paint layers.

Skipping Water-Based Sealer

Applying standard topcoat paint directly over raw skim coat or old powdery paint without an anti-alkali sealer prevents proper adhesion, leading to early peeling.

Wrong Paint Product Selection

Using basic interior matt emulsion paints in bathrooms instead of moisture-resistant, anti-mould paint formulas allows water vapor to penetrate the film quickly.

How to Fix and Prevent Peeling Bathroom Paint

A simple touch-up or repainting directly over peeling spots will fail within months. Here is the proper multi-step approach for long-lasting bathroom walls:

1

Scrape Off All Loose & Flaking Paint

Scrape back all peeling paint down to the solid base coat or original plaster. Leaving loose edges behind causes the new paint layer to pull away later.

2

Treat Mildew & Allow Complete Drying

Clean any underlying dark mould spots with an anti-fungal solution. Wash down the surface and allow the bathroom to dry thoroughly using fans before priming.

3

Apply Moisture-Resistant Oil or Water Sealer

Apply a high-adhesion anti-alkali sealer or oil-based primer. This seals the porous plaster slab beneath, blocking dampness and creating a tight grip for topcoats.

4

Finish with Anti-Mould Bathroom Topcoats

Apply two coats of specialized anti-mould interior paint (such as Nippon Vinilex 5000 or Dulux Wash & Wear Anti-Bacterial) designed specifically for humid environments.
