Standard Maintenance Repaint (2 Topcoats)
Applied when refreshing walls of similar light shades in sound condition without peeling or severe staining. Two coats deliver solid colour depth and durability.
PAINT, COLOUR & FINISHES GUIDE
The standard rule for interior repainting in Singapore is two coats of quality topcoat paint. However, the exact number depends on your existing wall colour, surface condition, paint product quality, and whether an underlying sealer or primer coat is required.
Before deciding how many coats your project requires, evaluate these critical wall conditions:
Painting light tones over dark walls (such as off-white over navy blue or dark grey) often requires a dedicated sealer/primer plus two or three topcoats to block bleed-through entirely.
Freshly plastered walls, raw skim coats, or old powdery surfaces absorb paint rapidly. They require a sealer coat to stabilize the surface before applying topcoats.
Premium trade-grade emulsion paints feature higher pigment density and opacity, offering complete coverage in two coats where cheaper paints may need three or four.
Spackled nail holes and patched plaster spots are highly porous. Spot-priming these patches before the main coats prevents uneven "flashing" or dull spots on the final finish.
Here is what to expect for typical home repainting projects in HDB flats and condominiums:
Applied when refreshing walls of similar light shades in sound condition without peeling or severe staining. Two coats deliver solid colour depth and durability.
Essential for older HDB flats or walls with scraped peeling areas. A binder/sealer coat locks the base coat, followed by two topcoats for a uniform finish.
Switching from deep accent shades (like dark red, dark green, or deep blue) to neutral whites requires a high-opacity primer followed by two or three full coats.
Even if a single coat looks acceptable while wet, it dries unevenly, shows roller marks under natural light, and wears down quickly when wiped or cleaned.
