WALL PREPARATION GUIDE

How to deal with hairline cracks before repainting

Fine, web-like hairline cracks are a common sight in Singapore HDB flats and condominiums. Usually caused by minor structural movement, concrete curing, or natural thermal expansion, these shallow surface cracks won't structural endanger your home—but painting straight over them guarantees they will telegraph right back through your new coat of paint within weeks.

Why Painting Directly Over Cracks Fails

A fresh layer of emulsion paint is paper-thin and cannot bridge gaps on its own. Proper surface prep is required to restore a smooth base:

Paint Shrinkage

As liquid paint dries and evaporates, it pulls tight across cracks, causing the fresh coating to split along the existing line.

Dust Contamination

Hairline fissures collect dust and loose plaster micro-particles that ruin paint adhesion if not cleaned and sealed first.

Thermal Expansion

Singapore’s hot climate causes minor daily expansion in walls, which reopens un-filled fine cracks behind rigid paint coats.

Uneven Absorbency

Unsealed putty or exposed plaster patches absorb topcoat paint differently, resulting in patchy, visible "flashing" spots.

Step-by-Step Method to Repair Hairline Cracks

For fine cracks under 1mm wide, follow this professional sequence for seamless, invisible wall repairs:

1

Rake and Clean the Crack

Gently run the tip of a scraper or putty knife along the crack to clear away loose plaster fragments. Dust out the line with a dry brush or microfibre cloth.

2

Apply Flexible Interior Putty or Skim Coat

Press a fine acrylic wall putty or wall patching compound firmly into the crack using a flexible scraper. Feather the edges flat against the surrounding wall.

3

Sand Flush After Full Drying

Allow the putty to dry completely. Sand the patched area lightly using fine-grit sandpaper (180–220 grit) until the seam feels perfectly flush with the wall.

4

Seal Patches with Wall Primer

Apply a spot-coat of water-based sealer or alkali-resistant wall primer over all patched areas to equalize absorption before applying your two topcoats.
